62 species seen at our 2017 Big Sit!

On Saturday we hosted the Big Sit at Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth. Over the course of the day, more than 30 people came by to help us count as many birds as we could.

Ultimately, we counted 62 species of birds (see the full list), which was 10 more than last year. Saturday’s sightings included a rare Clay-colored Sparrow, which stayed all day. We also had Lincoln, White-crowned, Swamp, Savanah, White-throated, and Song Sparrows. Raptors were well-represented, too, with Peregrines, Merlin, Sharp-shinned, Red-tailed, and Cooper’s Hawks, as well as Bald Eagles and Northern Harrier.

It was an excellent day! The Big Sit is an annual noncompetitive birding event where participants tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard from one spot within 24 hours.
