Position Available: Point Count Technician
Maine Audubon & Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
Full-time (40 hr/week), Seasonal Position
May 27-August 2, 2019
Pay Rate: $17.38/hr
Please note: This is a seasonal position at Maine Audubon, to be stationed at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Low-cost, shared housing may be available in Wells, Maine. A vehicle is provided for conducting survey work.
Position Description: Point count technician will to conduct tidal-marsh bird surveys at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in southern Maine. Research focuses on tidal marsh bird endemics such as the Saltmarsh and Nelson’s Sparrow.
Duties: Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Conducting passive and broadcast point-count surveys for birds in tidal marshes.
- Conducting salt marsh vegetation surveys at each location.
- The job requires both office and outdoor work. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. Poison ivy and biting insects are common throughout the
Qualifications: Applicant must be able to begin work before dawn and work independently for 8 hours/day in remote marshes under harsh field conditions (biting insects, swampy, and heat). All applicants must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, a good sense of humor, and the ability to cross small ditches and creeks, to walk over uneven and challenging terrain. Applicants must also have a working knowledge of northeastern bird identification by sight and sound. A general knowledge of marsh vegetation will also be helpful. Ideal applicants will have prior experience with point-count and broadcast call surveys. Applicants must be able to accurately and efficiently record and enter field data.
Communal, low cost, co-ed government housing may available in Wells, Maine. A vehicle is provided for conducting survey work.
