Northeast Making Progress on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Looking for some good news this morning? Check out the graph of Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) emissions below. In 2017, emissions continued a gratifying downward trend — dropping 18 percent from the previous year, and 23 percent below the 2017 cap.

RGGI is a partnership between Maine and eight other northeastern states where together we set a schedule to achieve targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s been a huge win for the environment, and a great reminder of the progress we can make in the fight against climate change.

Still, there is a lot left to do. For one thing, Maine is not setting targets that are nearly as aggressive as a handful of other RGGI states. As part of our advocacy work, Maine Audubon is working with our partners to change this. Imagine what these graphs will look like when Maine starts “contributing” its fair share!
