Be a sustainable shopper this holiday season

Happy Thanksgiving! For many people, this marks the official start of the holiday shopping season.  It’s possible to give thoughtful and considerate gifts to friends and family, be a sustainable shopper, and keep the environment in mind. For inspiration, listen to Maine Audubon Visitor Services and Retail Associate Stanley Sampson talk about small things people can do to make a difference, from using reusable wool dryer balls to drinking bird-friendly shade grown coffee.

Our nature stores have plenty of wonderful choices for products and experiences that make lovely gifts, and this Saturday, November 30, at our Gilsland Farm Audubon Center, members get double discounts, and the Handcrafted Holiday Bazaar features Maine artists with unique and locally-made gifts including ceramics, stained glass, upcycled blankets, jewelry, paper crafts, and much more.

Need more ideas?

Shop local: Locally-owned businesses make more local purchases, use local service providers, and support local nonprofits and community groups.

Plan ahead: Make one shopping trip instead of three, and shop with friends (it’s more fun that way anyway!) so you can carpool.

Give an experience: Experiences like going on a puffin cruise and taking a full moon snowshoe hike make wonderful gifts that expose people to nature and wildlife watching.

Tote it: Remember to bring your own shopping bags!
