Andy’s Note: Seeing Red, White, and Blue

Happy July, friends.

Each year as we wrap up the busy month of June and gear up for the July 4th holiday, I find myself thinking about the notion of patriotism. Especially at this time of great political division, the meaning of that word seems especially important.

More and more, I am hearing from folks who are watching and listening to the news with growing anxiety, frustration, and anger. I’m no stranger to that experience, either. Those are moments when I find myself immensely grateful to work at Maine Audubon.

To me, at its heart, patriotism is about citizen participation in our democracy. I am so pleased to be part of this organization where — in addition to our excellent work in conservation and education — we pour great energy and focus into advocacy on behalf of Maine’s wildlife and habitat. After all, democracy only works when we take action.

In honor of that, here are a few actions you can take this month:

  • Piping plover chick PIPL
The Plover Crew has tallied over 100 chicks on Maine beaches to date — a promising start!

Find a way to get involved in our 35th Annual Loon Count, taking place on Saturday, July 21, on lakes and ponds around the state. If you can’t volunteer, order a commemorative t-shirt!

  • Join our staff naturalist for a Thursday morning bird walk, or any of our other engaging adult education programs, and learn more about the environment we all share.
  • If you haven’t already, sign up to receive our Action Alert emails so you’re equipped to contact your representatives on pressing issues related to Maine’s wildlife and habitat.
  • Celebrate the Fourth in a manner that respects wildlife. Baby Piping Plovers are making themselves known on our coastal beaches, so step carefully — and remember that fireworks can be very alarming to all kinds of wildlife.
  • Join Maine Audubon with a gift, renew your membership, or simply donate to support our work. Our staff is passionately committed to wildlife conservation in Maine, and your support is the fuel that keeps us moving.

The Fourth of July is a wonderful holiday in so many respects. It is also an important reminder to exercise our democratic principles by taking action on behalf of the things we value.

Thank you for all you do. I hope your summer is off to a great start.
