Bird Walks at Scarborough Marsh

Join us for this Wednesday morning Bird Walk.  We meet at the Nature Center and check out the birds there and head to local hot spots in Scarborough.  We may hit Pine Point, the Eastern Trail, Pelreco and Dunstan Landing.

Experience the wildlife and plants of Scarborough Marsh as you paddle the Dunstan River. Paddling through the marsh, you will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from the snowy egret catching fish along the edge of the river to the mummichogs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will show you the numerous marsh plants and even give you a taste of an edible one.

This tour is suitable for both novice and experienced paddlers. 

We strongly encourage visitors to bring their own life jackets. We will have a small number available for purchase.

Chickadee Club

Calling all children ages 3-8 and their families! You are invited to become a founding member of the Maine Audubon Chickadee Club, a monthly subscription program for young adventurers. There are two ways to join:

Digital club members pay just $5/month for access to downloadable, printable activities, art prompts, templates, and more. Print as many copies as you need to explore all of your favorite outdoor spaces!

Opt in to the Gilsland Farm Flock for: 

  • A new activity kit to pick up at Gilsland Farm each month, chock full of the information, materials, and tools you’ll need for outdoor play and exploration, nature-inspired art, and more! 
  • Notifications of pop-up adventures you can do as a family at Gilsland Farm
  • Special opportunities to virtually interact with Maine Audubon educators and scientists 
  • Access to digital content so you can save and print more copies of favorite activities 

Cost: $30/month (Extra supplies for multiple children in the same household are available for $15/additional child per month.)

Bird Monitoring July

Bird Monitoring at Scarborough Marsh

Location: Scarborough Marsh

Join us for a marsh-wide bird survey.  Participants will go on foot, canoe or kayak.  Novices welcome and will be paired with advanced birders.  We have been doing this survey for over 20 years.  All the data collected helps researchers determine the health of the marsh and is entered into eBird.

August Full Moon Canoe Tour

Experience the sights and sounds of marsh creatures under the full moon. Watch for black-crowned night heron along the bank or snowy egret flying back to a nearby island for the evening. We may even see a harbor seal or a muskrat playing in the water.

Family Night Hike

Next session: August 7th, 2020

Location: Scarborough Marsh

On this family-oriented hike, participants will use their senses to discover the night life at the marsh. We will try to find many different species of wildlife including a special night mammal, the bat. Participants will be able to use Wildlife Acoustics Echo Meters (www.EchoMeterTouch.com) to detect them and may want to download the free smartphone app in advance.

Aquatic WILD and Junior Duck Stamp curriculum

From awareness to action, Project Aquatic WILD's hands-on approach to learning engagesstudents in investigating the world around them, connecting them to conservation careers,and participating in solid STEM activities.

The NEW REVISED AND UPDATED Curriculum and Activity Guide can easily beadapted to meet the learning requirements for academic disciplines ranging from scienceand environmental education to social studies, math, and language arts.

Participants will also receive a curriculum guide developed for the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program. This is a dynamic, multidisciplinary curriculum thatteaches wetland and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through highschool. The program encourages students to explore their natural world, invites them to investigate biology and wildlife principles.

**This workshop will be offered virtually if needed. It would be August 10 and 17.**
