Location: Gilsland Farm

Young children and their grown-ups are invited to spend an hour exploring nature together through stories, songs, art, and play. Each week will include both indoor activities and outdoor adventures designed to foster a connection to nature, encourage stewardship, and provide an introduction to group learning settings.

Advanced registration is encouraged! Drop-ins are welcome if space is available. ($15/week for members, $20/week nonmembers)

Young Birders Club (ages 10-16)

Location:  Fields Pond Audubon Center, Holden

Members: $5/class. Nonmembers: $8/class.

Join the Maine Audubon staff on the second Saturday of each month this spring for our Young Birders Club. Kids ages 10 – 16 are invited to join the Fields Pond Audubon Center Staff to learn the ins & outs of birding. Binoculars are available to use but bring your own if you have them.

Bluebird Nest Box Building Workshop

Get crafty in our cozy program room and build something that will help improve wildlife habitat in your neighborhood. This hands-on, family-friendly workshop will teach you where and how to place bluebird nest boxes in ideal habitats to attract inhabitants. Build the pre-cut kit together and take your box home in the end. No experience necessary. Children free with paying adult.  

PLEASE NOTE:  Preregistration is required and will close on April 1st (so we can order all our materials).

Wildlife Education Program: Scavengers

Join Maine Audubon and our friends at Center for Wildlife for an up close look at several of their animal ambassadors. We’ll learn about the adaptations that help these creatures survive in the wild, how they became non-releasable ambassadors, and what we can do to live in harmony with wildlife. 

Please note: This program entails a formal presentation involving live animals, and is most appropriate for school-aged children and older. Guests are asked to remain still and quiet throughout the 45-minute presentation so as not to disrupt the animals and other people. Thank you!

Earth Day Clean-up

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day by helping clean up Scarborough Marsh and Beaches!

Spring will be here before we know it and it will be time to clean up the marsh, beaches, Nature Center, and grounds for the new season. Join Maine Audubon, Friends of Scarborough Marsh, Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Scarborough community for a work day, and help make our corner of the earth a better place. Groups are welcome!

This year we are partnering with Project G.R.A.C.E. to collect food. Bring some nonperishable food or a store gift card to the clean-up and help the human neighbors of the marsh.

This event is Free! Registration is helpful for planning for food and supplies, but you are welcome to drop in.

Woodcock Watch

Learn about the wonders of the American Woodcock in a short presentation revealing secrets of our weirdest shorebird. After the program we will proceed outdoors to the fields around Fields Pond to experience one of spring's delights— the dazzling displays of courting woodcocks!  Hear the “peents” and twittering of the wings while watching the amazing spiral sky dance.  Dress warm and bring binoculars.

World Migratory Bird Day

Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with a birding adventure at the Fields Pond Audubon Center!  The wetlands, forests, and open field habitats of Fields Pond attract a wide range of bird species that are easily accessible for viewing along our miles of trails.  Join Maine Audubon’s Doug Hitchcox, members of the Penobscot Valley Chapter, the Fields Pond Young Birders Club, and other Maine Audubon staff for this annual birding blitz!

In celebration of World Migratory Bird Day the Nature Store at Fields Pond will be having a special binocular sale: 15% off of all in-stock Nikon binoculars and 10% of all in-stock Zeiss binoculars.

Season Opening Celebration at Scarborough Marsh

 The season opening weekend will be filled with fun and adventure!  We will have canoe and walking tours, nature crafts, used book and bake sale, demonstrations, exhibits, and more! Sunday we will have a free 7:30 bird walk. The weekend will be capped off with our Snowy Egret 5K road race.
