Woodland management with the birds in mind!

The Forestry for Maine Birds (FFMB) approach integrates bird conservation into forest management and planning. You will learn how to:

* Improve habitat for priority forest birds and a variety of other wildlife species

* Take care of your woodland

* Work with other forest management goals

* Enhance the value and enjoyment of Maine woodlands for many generations to come

Our instructors will be Sally Stockwell, Director of Conservation at Maine Audubon and forester Logan Johnson with the Maine Tree Farm Program. Category 1 CFE credits are pending.

Hosted by Somerset County SWCD in partnership with Old Canada Road, Forest Stewards Guild, Maine Audubon, Maine Forest Service and Maine Woodland Owners - Upper Kennebec Valley Chapter.

The workshop is free, but advanced registration is required as space is limited.

Tiny Tot Tour

Location: Scarborough Marsh

Introduce your wee folk to this unique habitat through interactive hands-on activities.  They will experience the marsh first hand, looking through algae for small critters, jumping in the mud, looking at fish and insects up close and more.  There will also be a story and a craft. 

An adult needs to accompany each child.

Bird Walks at Scarborough Marsh

Join us for this Wednesday morning Bird Walk.  We meet at the Nature Center and check out the birds there and head to local hot spots in Scarborough.  We may hit Pine Point, the Eastern Trail, Pelreco and Dunstan Landing.

Daily Canoe/Kayak Rentals -tentative schedule

We are making tentative plans for opening the marsh. Starting on July 1 we may be able to expand our service offerings.   This schedule could change at any point due to Covid 19 current circumstances.  We will update this information as we go along. PLEASE check with us, go to our website or email us at smac@maineadudubon.org. The renting procedure will be modified to keep our visitors and staff safe.  If you have your own life jacket, you may choose to bring it with you. 

Discover the meandering Dunstan River on your self-guided exploration. We'll provide a canoe/kayak, map, and life jackets.

Cost: $20/hour; $28/1.5 hours; $35/2 hours

($45 maximum; Discounts on Thursdays and for members)

Experience the wildlife and plants of Scarborough Marsh as you paddle the Dunstan River. Paddling through the marsh, you will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from the snowy egret catching fish along the edge of the river to the mummichogs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will show you the numerous marsh plants and even give you a taste of an edible one.

This tour is suitable for both novice and experienced paddlers.

Family Nature Walk: Mummichogs & Marsh Muck

Location: Scarborough Marsh

Explore the marsh for plants and animals through discovery-oriented, fun-filled activities that use all five senses. Participants will touch the marsh fish, the mummichog, look for the many migrating and resident birds, and look through algae to discover the minute creatures living there. This program is for "children" of all ages.

July Full Moon Canoe Tour

Experience the sights and sounds of marsh creatures under the full moon. Watch for black-crowned night heron along the bank or snowy egret flying back to a nearby island for the evening. We may even see a harbor seal or a muskrat playing in the water.

Exploring Nature Through Art

Sunset Puffin Cruise I

Join us on an evening cruise out of New Harbor to motor around Eastern Egg Rock and see the Atlantic Puffins that nest there! We time this trip at sunset for beautiful 'golden' light on the birds (great for photographers) and get to visit Franklin Lighthouse just as the light comes on.
