Borestone Mountain Open House Set for July 27
Elliotsville Plantation, Maine, July 2, 2008—Maine Audubon invites the public to a free open house at Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.
Visitors are invited to enjoy refreshments at the sanctuary’s historic Adirondack lodges, which are not normally open to the public. Audubon staff will be on hand to answer questions about the historic lodges and the sanctuary’s wildlife and hiking opportunities. The event has become popular with families, with more people attending every year.
Normally accessible only by boat or on foot, these private Adirondack-style lodges can be rented for the day, weekend or week. Open house guests who need assistance to get to the remote lodges may request special transport when registering.
Reservations are necessary by Wednesday, July 23. For more information or to register, call (207) 781-2330, ext. 231.
Open year-round, Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary’s 1,639 acres include old-growth forest, crystalline ponds, exposed mountain rocks and sweeping views. A seasonal trailside nature center located on the shore of Sunrise Pond features interactive displays and information about the area’s natural and human history.
Borestone was bequeathed to the National Audubon Society in 1958 by the family of Robert T. Moore. In 2000 the sanctuary was transferred to Maine Audubon as part of its affiliation with National Audubon.
