Angela Adams Celebrates Nature with Maine Audubon

angela adams is offering Maine Audubon members a 15-percent discount on purchases at its store and online at www.angelaadams.com during the month of February. Online shoppers should enter the promotional code: AUDUBON.

PORTLAND, Maine, February 6, 2008—Contemporary designer Angela Adams has partnered with Maine Audubon this month in an effort to educate and bring awareness about the beauty of nature in Maine.

On display in the windows of the designer's Portland store are the new angela adams Birch rugs along with taxidermy-mount animals loaned by Maine Audubon. The featured species are still found in Maine and include a bobcat, a beaver, an eastern coyote, a black bear cub and a snowy owl.

All of the animals used for mounts died accidentally, primarily in vehicle collisions, or of natural causes. They were retained and mounted for educational purposes. Some date back to the early 1900s, and were acquired from the Portland Museum of Natural History when it merged with Maine Audubon.

“Nature is the most inspiring element in creating our designs,” Adams said, explaining why she has chosen to highlight Maine Audubon's work for conservation in Maine. "We have a responsibility as a business to help bring awareness, appreciation and preservation to this important part of our world."

In conjunction with its window display and a dedicated Audubon section, the store will host two educational presentations at its location at 273 Congress Street in Portland:

David Sparks of Sparks Ark, February 16, 1 p.m.–2 p.m.
David Sparks, former Westbrook animal control officer, rehabilitates and takes care of injured wildlife. He also catches nuisance animals for people, like bats, raccoons and squirrels and rescues pets. David gives educational presentations with live animals that are native to Maine. He is a favorite presenter among children. At the upcoming event at the Angela Adams store, he will show approximately eight animals with a brief story and explanation about each animal.

Eric Hynes, Maine Audubon staff naturalist and manager of the environmental center at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth, February 23, 1 p.m.–2 p.m.
As staff naturalist and environmental center manager at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center, Eric Hynes is a resource for the public for natural history information. He leads a variety of workshops, field trips and tours for Maine Audubon year round. A University of Vermont graduate, Eric has worked as a biologist in a variety of capacities throughout the American continent, from Panama to the Pribilof Islands. He has extensive experience studying raptors in places such as the Snake River Canyon, neotropical migrant songbirds in the Midwest, and ground squirrels in the Rockies. During his presentation at the Angela Adams store, Eric will talk about the animals on display there.

The events are free, but have limited capacity for attendance. Please RSVP by February 13 for David Sparks and February 20 for Eric Hynes. Call (207) 774-3523.
