Camp ScholarshipsMerrymeeting Audubon Scholarshipsfor Chapter Area teens to Audubon's Hog Island Audubon Camp and for younger students to one of two Maine environmental education summer camps. All camps are residential. Full and partial scholarships are available. Applicants must submit essays with a completed application form, available below and at schools starting in February. Coastal Maine Bird StudiesChapter area teens ages 14 to 17 may apply for a partial scholarship to Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens at Audubon's Hog Island Camp in Bremen . Co-sponsored with the American Birding Association, this program includes field identification, bird song recognition, conservation practices, and the opportunity to observe Audubon’s seabird conservation field research. The applicant must attend a high school within the Chapter’s catchment area and be sponsored by a science teacher at the high school. He/she must be in grade 9-12 spring 2012. The completed student application, essay and recommendation are due by February 8, 2012. Environmental Education CampsChildren in grades 3 through 5may apply for Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville, Maine. Tanglewood provides traditional camp activities and environmental education on woods and wildlife. Campers select a six-day session from late June to mid-August.
Students who will be 10-14 in Augustmay apply to Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond near Bethel, Maine. Camp sessions include Woodcraft Skills, Primitive Skills and Naturalist Skills. The Naturalist Skills program was added in summer 2005 and focuses on learning the science and ecology of the natural world. In summer 2005 many of our campers applied for this program. Many of the campers who apply also love the Primitive Skills program where they report on building "debris huts," learning the edible plants of the area, wilderness first aid, and other outdoor self-sufficiency skills.
Application Deadline and FundingFinal applications, including essays, must be received by April 15, 2012 for the summer season. MMAS looks at available funds as of April 1 each year and determines how many campers to send. Any funds collected after this date apply to the next year's program. These scholarships are funded by the Merrymeeting Audubon Chapter and by organizations and individuals who contribute as co-sponsors.
