Camp Scholarships

Merrymeeting Audubon

Merrymeeting Audubon Society offers camp scholarships for residents of the Chapter Area to three Maine environmental education summer camps. All are residential. Both full and partial scholarships are available. Applicants submit essays with a completed application form, available in area schools around February each year, or by contacting

Merrymeeting Audubon.

Children in grades 3 through 5 may apply for Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville , Maine. Tanglewood provides traditional camp activities and environmental education on woods and wildlife. Campers select a six-day session from late June to mid-August.

Students who will be 10-14 in August may apply to Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond near Bethel, Maine . Camp sessions include Woodcraft Skills, Primitive Skills and Naturalist Skills. The Naturalist Skills program was added in summer 2005 and focuses on learning the science and ecology of the natural world. In summer 2005 many of our campers applied for this program. Many of the campers who apply also love the Primitive Skills program where they report on building "debris huts," learning the edible plants of the area, wilderness first aid, and other outdoor self-sufficiency skills.

Visit Scholarship Reports for photos and more.

Adult and Youth Scholarships for Maine Audubon's Hog Island Camp

For students and adults interested in stewardship of our natural environment, especially those interested in passing their knowledge on to others, several three-quarter scholarships are offered each year to Maine Audubon's Hog Island camp in Bremen . Students 10-13 may apply for Youth Camp. Adults may apply for programs such as Natural History of the Maine CoastWorkshop for Educators, and Field Ornithology.

Interested teachers should contact us for more details.

Application Deadline and Funding

Final applications, including essays, must be received by April 1 for the summer season.

MMAS looks at available funds as of April 1 each year and determines how many campers to send. Any funds collected after this date apply to the next year's program. These scholarships are funded by the Merrymeeting Audubon Chapter and by organizations and individuals who contribute as co-sponsors.
