RACHEL CARSON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

with Glen Evans

The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge was established to preserve ten important estuaries from Kittery to Cape Elizabeth that are key points along migration routes of waterfowl and other migratory birds. We will sample the refuge searching for migrating coastal shore and marsh birds.  Bring a snack/lunch and water.

BIRDING MORSE MOUNTAIN AND SEAWALL BEACH

with Maurice Dauphin

The Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area is a great spot for viewing the fall migration of raptors. Maurice Dauphin will help you identify the birds as they soar overhead. Bring sturdy shoes and lunch.

Meet at the Morse Mountain parking lot off Route 216, Phippsburg, 8:00 am. For additional information contact Maurice at 389-2585.

BIRDING WILLIAMS FIELD - HAWKS AND MORE

Join Merrymeeting Audubon and the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust to watch for hawks and explore this unique property. The six acre Williams Field is included in the Trust's Basin Cove and Curtis Cove Project consisting of 87 acres of diverse ecosystems. A fund raising campaign is underway by HHLT to purchase this property to protect its critical wildlife habitat and marine resources, and provide permanent public access to the property. BASIN POINT HAWK WATCH

Andrew Gilbert will lead this trip to Basin Point in Harpswell. If the wind direction is not favorable
for hawk migration, the Harpswell Neck also offers numerous habitats for both sea and land migrants as well as residents. Itinerary will be based on wind conditions and area scouting reports.

Meet at Hannaford in Brunswick at 8:00 am to car pool or at the Dolphin Marina parking lot at 8:30 am. For additional information, call Ted Allen at 729-8661.

Luke Seitz will present photos and tales from his summer as the whale and seabird spotter on the Odyssey Whale Watch out of Portland, Maine as well as other pelagic birding experiences on the Gulf of Maine.

HAMILTON SANCTUARY WORK DAY

With its open fields, young evergreen stands, wetlands, salt-water inlets, and mud flats, Maine Audubon’s Hamilton Sanctuary is an outstanding natural landscape just outside Bath, Maine. Join members of Merrymeeting Audubon for a morning of work and exploration.

GREEN POINT FARM WMA

with Mike Fahay

Fall migrants will be the target on these two walks through the weedy fields at Maine Inland Fish and Wildlife’s Green Point Farm WMA in Dresden. Migrant sparrows abound here with ten species recorded here and individuals at times numbering in the hundreds. We will also look for other migrants in the variety of habitats Green Point has to offer.

Meet at the CVS in Bath at 7:00 to car-pool, or at 7:30 at Green Point. Park next to the large, green, metal shed at Green Point Farm (not at the little green farmhouse by the bridge).

CLIMATE CHANGE WITH GEORGE JACOBSON

Merrymeeting Audubon is pleased to present George Jacobson, Professor of Botany and Quaternary Studies at the University of Maine and author of Maine's Climate Future.

Professor Jacobson has been part of what is now the Climate Change Institute since 1979,and served as its Director for nearly a decade. His research has focused on biological aspects of long-term changes in climate, ecosystems, and landscapes for the period since the last ice age.

HERMIT ISLAND

with Carol Jack

Carol Jack leads this annual outing to Hermit Island on Small Point in Phippsburg. We’will walk along Head Beach, by ocean overlooks and along a wooded dirt road by a saltwater cove. Expect to see ducks, grebes, scoters, loons, as well as some woodland birds.

Meet 8:30 am at Bath Plaza near CVS or 9:00 at Head Beach, Hermit Island, Route 216, Phippsburg. For additional information, contact Carol Jack (207) 729-0220.

WATERFOWL OF SABATTUS POND

with John Berry

John Berry leads this trip to Sabattus Pond in Sabattus, Maine. In the fall, Sabattus hosts large concentrations of migrating waterfowl, including Ruddy and Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Scaup and Coots.
