Annual Loon CountThe annual loon count has been taking place for more than 20 years from 7-7:30 a.m. on lakes across the state on the third Saturday in July. Assigned in advance a lake or portion of a lake, more than 1,000 “citizen
scientist” volunteers look for loons from a boat or the shore
and then report all adults and The loon count gives researchers a reliable way to compare the approximate number of loons in Maine to populations in past years. The results from across the state are collected by Maine Audubon.
