Community Gardens

Gilsland Farm Audubon Center

The Community Gardens at Gilsland Farm are tended by volunteer gardeners with a wide range of style and experience.

In exchange for using a garden plot, gardeners agree to use only organic gardening techniques and follow the garden’s guidelines.

The Community Gardens welcome new members as plots become available.

How long is the waiting list for a plot?

It varies, but most people wait a few seasons for an opening.

How big are the plots?

Approximate plot sizes are:
• Full plot: 20’ x 30’ (600 square feet)
• Three-quarter plot: 20’ x 22.5’ (450 square feet)
• Half plot: 20’ x 15’ (300 square feet)
• Quarter plot: 10’ x 15’ (150 square feet)

Are there any guidelines?

Gardeners may cultivate flowers, fruit or vegetables. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides are allowed in the Community Gardens, nor are "natural," "organic" or "botanical" substances that might be harmful to people, animals or beneficial insects. No produce may be grown for sale and plots may not be used for business purposes. Gardeners are asked to avoid plants that may pose difficulties for neighboring plots.

Is there a fee for joining the Community Gardens?

There is a nominal membership fee according to plot size, and all gardeners must volunteer up to four hours of service per year to Maine Audubon in addition to fulfilling a community garden task, also according to plot size.

Do I have to be a Maine Audubon member to join the Community Gardens?

No, but Maine Audubon welcomes new members! Click here for more information.
