Morning, noon, and night . . . we connect people with nature. | 2007 Scholarship WinnersWe are pleased to announce the winners, and share their winning essays.
Thanks to a successful 2006 Bird-A-Thon, Downeast Audubon (DEA) has awarded three local middle-school students with full scholarships, each worth $1,150, for a week-long stay at Maine Audubon Youth Camp on Hog Island in Bremen this summer.
Gavin RogersGavin, 12, is from Penobscot and enjoys hiking and music. He wrote about his adventures with the American Woodcock on Blue Hill Mountain.
Chelsey StaplesChelsey, 11, also from Penobscot, is a member of the Busy Bees 4-H club and raises Tunis sheep. She shared her experience of a live bird that got brought into the house by the family cat (and survived!).
Tessa Isis-Bahoosh Tessa, 12, is from Brooklin,
enjoys nature, and loves to read. She wrote about a family outing on
her birthday to see puffins.
About the ContestTo be eligible for the scholarships, students from Hancock County between the ages of 11 and 13 were given the opportunity to describe, in an essay or artwork, their favorite bird experience.
