2007 Scholarship Winners

We are pleased to announce the winners, and share their winning essays.

Thanks to a successful 2006 Bird-A-Thon, Downeast Audubon (DEA) has  awarded three local middle-school students with full scholarships, each worth $1,150, for a week-long stay at Maine Audubon Youth Camp on Hog Island in Bremen this summer.

Gavin Rogers

Gavin, 12, is from Penobscot and enjoys hiking and music.  He wrote about his adventures with the American Woodcock on Blue Hill Mountain.

Chelsey Staples

Chelsey, 11, also from Penobscot, is a member of the Busy Bees 4-H club and raises Tunis sheep. She shared her experience of a live bird that got brought into the house by the family cat (and survived!).

Tessa Isis-Bahoosh

Tessa, 12, is from Brooklin, enjoys nature, and loves to read. She wrote about a family outing on her birthday to see puffins.

Gavin, Chelsey, and Tessa will begin summer nature camp at the end of July.

About the Contest

To be eligible for the scholarships, students from Hancock County between the ages of 11 and 13 were given the opportunity to describe, in an essay or artwork, their favorite bird experience.

All entries to the contest were assessed anonymously by a panel of judges from the DEA board of directors and education committee. DEA's Hog Island scholarship contest is in its third year.
