The Maine Loon Project26th Annual Loon CountThe Maine Audubon Loon Count will take place on Saturday, July 18th, from 7 to 7:30 a.m. on lakes and ponds all across the state. If you are interested in participating in the count, please e-mail Susan Gallo, Loon Project Director, at sgallo@maineaudubon.org or call 781-2330 ext. 216. We'll need to know your mailing address and the lake where you'd like to count loons. No prior experience needed, just an ability to survey all or part of a lake with binoculars, either from shore or a boat. Deadline to sign up for the count is Wednesday July 15th. 2009 Loon Photo Contest Are you an experienced photographer willing to capture the perfect picture of a Maine loon? Or are you just starting out with an interest in photographing birds? The Maine Loon Project at Maine Audubon is hosting a loon photo contest this summer, and would like to see what you can do. Details COMING SOON to this webpage, but in the meantime, please respect loons and do not disturb them either on or off the nest, especially at this critical time of the year. Use a zoom lens or watch from a blind to minimize your impact. Best of luck, we look forward to seeing your photos!
2008 loon count wrap-upThe 25th annual Maine Audubon Loon Count was a great success, with 900 volunteers patrolling over 300 lakes and ponds across the state on July 19. Thanks to all who have participated in this important conservation effort through the years. We could not have reached this milestone without you. See the results here.
"Living in Loon Territory" Brochures available now. This hugely popular brochure first published in 2003 has been reprinted thanks to the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund.
About the Maine Loon Project Why is it important to understand loons in our state, and how do we use the information we gather?
Solving Loon Mysteries What happens to the chicks we see on count day? Do they survive? Do they make it to adulthood? If they disappear, what’s the cause?
