Citizen Science

Lend a Hand to Protect Wildlife

Providing biologists and resource managers with a mountain of data, some citizens count loons, songbirds, or horseshoe crabs, while others record the breeding calls of frogs and toads, and hundreds more test waters from our ocean, lakes, and vernal - or small woodland - pools.

Efforts by citizen scientists are making a major difference. "Volunteers are helping us collect information from across the state that we simply do not have the staff or resources to get ourselves," says Sally Stockwell, Director of Conservation for Maine Audubon. Other project directors agree.

By relying on volunteer researchers, professionals are able to track a particular species or habitat over time and begin to address more long-term conservation issues.

Volunteers are Needed!

SEANET is a citizen science program that brings together researchers and citizen scientists in a long-term collaborative effort to identify and diminish threats to marine birds.
