| Action Update: Riverfront Community DevelopmentLegislators Approve Bond Package for ConservationWhen more than 75 people turned out in March for a public hearing on conservation bonds, lawmakers took note. The room was packed, filled to overflowing with people sporting bright lapel stickers supporting the Land for Maine’s Future and Riverfront Community Development bonds, which have been priorities for Maine Audubon in this session of the Legislature.Shortly after the hearing, legislators approved a bond package that includes $17 million for the Land for Maine's Future program and $5 million for Riverfront Community Development as well as $7.5 million for parks and $1.45 million for trails.
"Given this year's fiscal constraints and the many other important bonding priorities, we thank the Legislature and Governor Baldacci for bipartisan support of conservation," said Maine Audubon executive director Kevin Carley.
To ensure passage, the bonds will need a strong showing of support at the polls in November.
