Your opinion matters to LURC commissioners. Tell them how you feel about the proposed changes to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
It’s essential that LURC receive input from thoughtful, informed
people who care deeply about Maine's north woods and coastal region. Let them know why wildlife habitat and remote recreation opportunities mean so much to you. Your message might include the following information:
- Maine's North Woods are the largest remaining undeveloped forest east of the Mississippi, yet are increasingly threatened by development pressures.
- The forest provides habitat for a wide range of plants and animals, including moose, marten, lynx, loons, and brook trout. These species depend on clean water, limited disturbance, and a variety of forest types and ages to thrive.
- The forest provides habitat for a wide range of plants and animals, including moose, marten, lynx, loons, and brook trout. These species depend on clean water, limited disturbance, a variety of forest types and ages, and/or expansive blocks of habitat to thrive.
- Wildlife watching is the fastest growing outdoor recreation activity in the country, and Maine tops the nation with 57% participating in 2006, contributing $8.7 million to the state’s economy. Fishing contributed another $2.6 million and hunting $2.4 million.
- Please ensure a strong Comprehensive Land Use Plan that protects the region's most important assets by supporting the Commission's four principle values:
- Remoteness and natural character
- Diverse and abundant recreational opportunities, particularly for primitive pursuits
- Diverse, abundant and unique natural resources
- Fiber and food production, and the tradition of a working landscape
- Please support policies that protect the undeveloped character of the region, protect wildlife habitat, protect opportunities for back country recreation and nature-based tourism, and encourage sustainable forestry.
