Seasonal/Temporary Employment

 

Seasonal Biologists/Southern Maine (3)

Three full-time seasonal biologists to monitor and manage endangered least terns and piping plovers in Southern Maine. Duties include: locating nests, erecting fencing, tracking nest success and fledglings, monitoring predation, supervising project interns and volunteers, conducting outreach programs, and negotiating and implementing management agreements (private and public).

Successful applicants will:

  • have experience working with birds
  • have excellent observation skills
  • be a diplomatic and effective communicator
  • walk extensively on soft substrates (sand beaches)
  • lift and carry heavy equipment (50 pounds or more)
  • have ability and willingness to work outdoors on beaches in all weather conditions
  • clean driving record last 5 years
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required

These full-time positions run from approximately April 12 to August 27. Some weekend work required. Stipend range is $460–$500/week depending on experience. EOE.

Store Manager/Assistant Manager, Scarborough

A full time Store Manager and part time Assistant Store Manager are needed at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center. The positions run from the end of May through the middle of September.  Holiday and weekend work are required.  The primary responsibilities of these positions are to manage the nature store, while educating the public. The position entails running all aspects of the store including: daily bookkeeping of store sales, inventorying and restocking merchandise, renting canoes, scheduling and overseeing volunteers, and merchandizing.  Individuals have the opportunity to lead educational tours if desired.

 

The successful applicant will:

  • Have retail experience.
  • Be able to handle changing situations and emergencies.
  • Be able to multi-task and work with minimal supervision.
  • Have current First Aid and CPR certification prior to the start of the job.
  • Have an understanding of salt marsh ecology or be willing to gain knowledge of this unique ecosystem.
  • Have strength for lifting and paddling canoes.

Piping Plover/Least Tern Project Outreach Coordinator/Southern Maine (1)

Full time outreach coordinator works in conjunction with a team of biologists, municipal and state officials and others to actively involve the community in conserving endangered piping plovers and least terns in Maine. Duties include conducting outreach on heavily used beaches using table-top displays and games, guided walks and general education on the beach, summer youth programs, and other outreach efforts. The position may recruit and supervise project interns and volunteers as well as assist with management of these endangered birds.

The successful applicant will:

  • have demonstrated verbal and written communications skills, including public speaking skill
  • have passion for wildlife conservation with knowledge of birds preferred
  • have superior organizational skill and attention to detail
  • have computer skills for the production of outreach materials;
  • work regular weekends with time off during weekdays
  • have willingness to travel (vehicle often provided)

  • have ability and willingness to work outdoors on beaches in all weather conditions

Internships

Environmental Education Intern / Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center

The environmental education intern leads educational programs on salt-marsh ecology at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center (training provided). These 1.5-hour, hands-on nature explorations for groups of all ages are held Monday through Friday from April 31 to June 18. After June 18, the center is open to the public seven days a week, and the intern assists with a variety of family, children and adult programs throughout the summer. In addition, the intern will complete a project mutually designed with the supervisor, such as making displays and interactive exhibits, updating the teacher and volunteer packets with current background information and activities, and designing and creating new props and activities for programs.

Intern must be able to work independently and have experience working with the public. A background in teaching or environmental education and experience working with children is a plus.  Benefits are negotiable depending on the time commitment. Possible contract work is available. Benefits may include: free canoe rentals; 25 percent discount on store merchandise; discounted or free admission to Maine Audubon programs and trips; enrichment in natural history and educational techniques.
