Seasonal/Temporary Employment

 

Seasonal Biologists/Southern Maine (2)

Two full-time seasonal biologists to monitor and manage endangered least terns and piping plovers in Southern Maine. Duties include: locating nests, erecting fencing, tracking nest success and fledglings, monitoring predation, supervising project interns and volunteers, conducting educational outreach programs, and negotiating and implementing management agreements (private and public).

Successful applicants will:

  • have experience working with birds
  • have excellent observation skills
  • be an effective, engaging, and diplomatic communicator verbally and in writing
  • walk extensively on soft substrates (sand beaches)
  • lift and carry heavy equipment of 50 pounds or more
  • have ability and willingness to work outdoors on beaches in all weather conditions
  • clean driving record last 5 years
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required

These full-time positions run from approximately April 12 to August 16. Some weekend and evening work required. Stipend $460-500/week depending on experience. EOE.

Summer Day Camp Educators

Camp educators will develop and teach natural history activities to day campers at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth. Staff will supervise and ensure a safe and fun experience for campers during all camp activities, and help train, supervise and mentor high school volunteers. A low staff-to-camper ratio and the enthusiasm of staff are keys to the success of these programs. Nine weeks of camp will provide a variety of experiences and a chance to share and learn many skills.
The successful applicant will:

  • Have or be working towards a college degree in biology, education, environmental studies, or a similar degree;
  • Preferably have experience at a camp, developing and presenting natural history programs, including nature games and activities;
  • Be familiar with natural history and ecological concepts and be willing to learn those relevant to Maine;
  • Be familiar with experiential and adventure education philosophies;
  • Be willing to work as an individual and a team to develop lesson plans within the curriculum;
  • Be able to communicate with, and be sensitive to, the needs of children ages 6-11;
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Have current First Aid and CPR certification prior to the start of training;
  • Be enthusiastic and flexible with a sense of humor; and
  • Preferably have theatrical, musical, and/or artistic talents or interests.

Training starts June 18th. Day camp runs Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm, educators work from 8am-4pm. Positions end by August 28th, 2011.
Salary range is $320-$350 per week depending on experience and qualifications.

Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center

Assistant Director

From the end of April until mid June, the assistant coordinator schedules volunteers, leads nature explorations of salt-marsh ecology with school groups, and helps prepare for summer programs. After school is finished, the coordinator greets the public, leads canoe tours, schedules and oversees volunteers, and maintains the center in addition to delivering public programs on salt-marsh ecology.

Qualifications:

  • have excellent canoeing abilities and be able to canoe under challenging conditions;
  • experience working with children;
  • knowledge of basic natural history and ecological concepts (salt marsh knowledge a plus);
  • able to multitask
  • able to manage and recruit adult and teenage volunteers;
  • CPR and First Aid certification;
  • able to work with minimal supervision;
  • must be friendly, have high energy and good sense of humor.
  • able to work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions
  • retail experience a plus

Physical requirements:

  • ability to stand for extended periods of time;
  • ability to lift 75 pound canoe with another person, carry that canoe 30 feet, and put the canoe up on a rack requiring twisting and turning;
  • ability to canoe against the wind and current.

The position begins mid April and ends September 11. This approximately 30-hour work week consists of variable hours three to four days a week, including weekends and some evenings.

 Nature Center Assistant 

The Store/Nature Center Assistant’s primary responsibilities will be running the Nature Store, including merchandising, cash out, and inventory.  On an as needed basis the person will be leading nature programs for the general public by canoe and walking tours.  This position requires managing volunteers.  

Qualifications:

  • retail experience, including cash out, inventory and merchandising;
  • able to multitask;
  • canoeing experience - be able to lift and paddle canoes
  • able to manage and recruit adult and teenage volunteers;
  • knowledge of basic natural history and ecological concepts;
  • CPR and First Aid certification;
  • able to work with minimal supervision;
  • experience working with children;
  • must be friendly, have high energy and good sense of humor.

Internships

Preschool Environmental Education Intern at Gilsland Farm

We are looking for a volunteer intern who is seeking experience working with three to six year old children in a Preschool Discovery nature program at Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Center in Falmouth, Maine.


Our Curious Cubs program is designed to foster an awareness and love of nature, build developmentally appropriate social, sensory and language skills, and begin to develop a nature-based vocabulary.


The intern will assist with group management, curriculum and materials design, program setup and cleanup, and teaching of hands-on discovery programs. Activities are based on a variety of seasonal wildlife themes and include play, creative arts, movement, music, games and outdoor exploration.

Intern must have experience and/or a passion for working with young children, and a demonstrated interest in nature or environmental education. Benefits include free Maine Audubon membership, 15 percent discount on store merchandise, discounted or free admission to some Maine Audubon programs and trips, and enrichment in natural history and educational methods.

Intern will commit to remainder of the winter session which runs between January 3 and March 20, on Tuesdays from 10:00 am -1:30 pm. The spring session is also an option.

Environmental Education Intern / Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center


The environmental education intern leads educational programs on salt-marsh ecology at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center (training provided). These 1.5-hour, hands-on nature explorations for groups of all ages are held Monday through Friday from May 2 to June 18.

After June 18, the center is open to the public seven days a week, and the intern assists with a variety of family, children and adult programs throughout the summer. In addition, the intern will complete a project mutually designed with the supervisor, such as making displays and interactive exhibits, updating the teacher and volunteer packets with current background information and activities, and designing and creating new props and activities for programs.

Intern must:

  • be able to work independently
  • have experience working with the public.
  • have a background in teaching or environmental education and experience working with children

Benefits are negotiable depending on the time commitment. Possible contract work is available. Benefits may include: free canoe rentals; 25 percent discount on store merchandise; discounted or free admission to Maine Audubon programs and trips; enrichment in natural history and educational techniques.
